The Seeds of Hope by Laurie Lewis

Anyone who ever saw the movie Shawshank Redemption has to be familiar with the final words in the movie when Red is on the bus to Texas “I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope…..”.

When I finally let go of the fear of a future without alcohol, this incredible amount of freedom and hope seemed to take its place-emotions I could not ever remember having before. Perhaps that’s why I could watch that scene over and over. Perhaps too, that is why the quote from Jonathan Lockwood Huie grabbed my attention so when preparing for this newsletter

That hope is what allows a person to realize the possibilities in life which then leads to believing they can actually reach for something… to set a goal. Whether or not it is said specifically in any of the following stories from our alumni who are in AODA recovery, that is exactly what happened! Fear and self-doubt began to fade away, the belief that they were worthy of a new life began to surge; and in the midst of that, positive things started to manifest in both their minds and in their lives.

Hope, change, taking action…….it all begins with removing the self-doubt and altering the way we view ourselves and our life. And STEP plays a huge part in helping us get that started. The environment that has been created here at STEP nurtures it. Our motto even says it, “STEP Industries, Inc. is a social enterprise offering HOPE……..”
